KENNEDY
CENTER
, NATIONAL CATHEDRAL and
GEORGETOWN
Monday,
November 18, 2002
9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
At the John F. Kennedy
Center for the performing arts we
will have an opportunity to see the three beautiful theaters and many of the
special international gifts presented to this lavish cultural center. The
Washington National Cathedral is an
exceptional 14th century Gothic-style cathedral. Built the way churches used
to be, it uses no structural steel and employs workmanship of high quality.
Exquisite stained glass windows and rare tapestries grace this magnificent
cathedral which is one of the largest churches in the world.
Georgetown
, which flourished in the late 1700's as a great tobacco port, today
retains a distinctive charm and air of individuality setting it apart from
other residential sections of the city. It
is home to Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet members, Congressional delegates,
diplomats and ordinary citizens. We
are able to arrange a visit to a couple of private homes of great charm and
distinction. Refreshments will be served in one of the homes, which are not
normally open to the public. Time may be available for browsing in the
numerous and varied shops or, weather permitting, walk along the historic and
scenic
C & O
Canal
.
Fee: $50.00 per person, lunch is not

Arlington
National
Cemetery

under constant vigil of a lone sentry, and witness the ceremonial changing of
the Honor Guard. A stop will be
made at the Kennedy gravesites
marked by the Eternal Flame. Then
we proceed via scenic
George Washington Parkway
to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's
handsome estate on the
Potomac
. The buildings and grounds
survive as one of the finest examples of an 18th century plantation.
We will then proceed to
Alexandria
, which was founded in 1749 and was a flourishing seaport before the Federal
City of Washington, D.C. existed. Among
the historic buildings to be seen in
Alexandria

Christ
Church
, where the pews of George Washington and Robert E. Lee are still preserved,
and Ramsey House,
