Cooperation between school and business, teaching offer in technology, science and mathematics to teacher in secondary and comprehensive school

Purpose and objectives of the initiative.
The project will:
1. Get students more interested in technology, science and mathematics for the best for the society, business and industry, education and most of all for the students themselves.

2. Develop anew course of study based on technology, science and mathematics.

a. The students (teachers from secondary and comprehensive school) will practice in a local company two times during their studies, a week each time.

b. Experiences from these placements connected to technology, science and mathematics, the students have to use in their own teaching back in school during the course.

3. Develop a network between education and local companies.

4. Develop a network between local companies which participate in this study.

5. Animate and concretize difficult subjects in technology, science and mathematics.

6. Develop teaching and educational material in technology, science and mathematics

Main beneficiaries:

I . The students from secondary and comprehensive school will get a more concrete teaching and education.

2. Students (teacher form secondary and comprehensive school) will gain a deeper understanding of how technology, science and mathematics are used in daily work at local companies and how they can use this knowledge in their own teaching.

3. The university and postgraduate college will get more students and more interested students.

4. The society, business and industry will get more qualified students from university and postgraduate college.

1. The Competence Building Program' (Kompetanseutviklingsprogrammet) has funded most of this program

5. Troms Kraft. This is a programme in Norway that is giving support to different parts of the working life to develop new ways to create competence in working life in cooperation with a university, college or something similar.

Essential elements:
The teachers placement

- The experiences from the teachers placement which they as students have to practice on their own students from secondary and comprehensive school during the period between the two placements.

- That the students managed to pass on their new knowledge how technology, science
and mathematics are used in business and industry to their own students (from
secondary and comprehensive school) back to their school
Cooperation between local companies and the university and the postgraduate college.

- It is very important that the different parts in this partnership manage to cooperate during the study

Main factors of its success.

- Our aim is to illustrate theories (normally leamt by studying), through examples from daily work in local companies.

Number of years the program has been in existence and growth since inception; We started planning of this project in December 2001. The first teacher placement will take place in September/October 2002. The main study will start in March/April 2003.

Potential replication and scale of the initiative;
This is a pilot project. Our aim is to make this study permanent and for teachers in the whole
country.
