Future Leaders In Training Today: A Business Model Of Partnership In Education
The Model United Nations General Assembly Competition for South African High Schools
Purpose / Objective of your initiative
The main objective of the project is to identify and create future leader today, thereby subscribing to the notion of leadership, nation building and citizenship in South Africa, It is also to inculcate and foster a sense of leadership, learning and awareness of global issues among high school youth,
Main Partners
Main partners are SAB, Education Africa, South African Department of Education and United Nations.
Main Beneficiaries
The main beneficiaries are South African high school children but this has a multiplier effect for all those who are involved in the training and sponsoring of these children.
Main Contributors
Main contributors are SAB (myself (Nolitha) as the main contact person) and Education Africa (which is one of the key education NGO's in South Africa. Education Africa is a partner and service provider for the project).
Essential Elements
The essential elements are partnerships, leadership and global citizenship.
Main Factors For Its Success and Evidence of the Project Strength Success thus far has been:
- being able to expose South African youth to culture of learning and awareness on global issues
- to have taken no less than 22 youths in any one year for five years
- to compete in the international debates in New York against other children of the world
- to have exposed such Youth to the United Nations internal processes
- to have created an alma mata of these youth so as to follow their progress
- to have created an awareness around HIV/AIDS (this is a mandatory topic at provincial level) among high school children
- The youth that has undergone this training and who have been exposed to the UN Processes have been invited by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to be on the panel of the Youth that quizzed our President Mbeki on National Issues on June, 16 2002.
- These children have now become the ambassadors and are speaking on behalf of South African children on national and global issues.
- The debaters later become tutors of the oncoming groups and this provides sustainability of the project.
- To have exposed these children to diplomats at the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN where issues pre-main debates have been debated.
- Number Of Years The Program Has Been In Existence
From 1995 and still ongoing.
Potential Replication And Scale Of The Initiative
This is an ongoing program, which takes place annually at provincial, national and international levels. Forty schools participate in each province and there are nine provinces, thus over 300 schools participate in all new provinces.
Firstly, there are provincial competitions, which culminate into a national competition which in turn culminates Into an international competition.
In the final international competition there are 22 youths that participate, (this includes their tutors (who have been previous debaters).
This is a huge project which has caught the attention of both the national and the international world.
