SERVICE-LEARNING IN A NUTSHELL

Purpose/objective of Initiative:
To meet the present and emerging needs of youth, the work force and the community by systematically joining them together through service-learning, school to career, and educational partnerships.

Main Partners:
Local facilities for the elderly and children, hospitals, civic and community groups and businesses.

Main beneficiaries:
The students and the community in which they served..

The RI Department of Education, Learn and Serve America and Alan Shawn Feinstein

WHO:
Name the populations who should be involved in service-learning.
WHAT: Describe the difference between community service and service-learning.
WHY: Detail the benefits of service-learning to youth, businesses, agencies, the community and the work force. Describe the synergy between service-learning and school to career.
HOW:
Describe the role of educational partnerships in service- learning
Describe the major components of service learning-
preparation: the needs assessment
research and training
action: direct, indirect, and advocacy
reflection: rationale for types
evaluation and assessment: methods
portfolio building
recognition: methods, reasons for celebration

Main factors of its success:
The program expansion from: 350 to 825 students enrolled and 48 partnerships developed.

Number of Years the program has been in existence:
Ten Years

Impact:
The program became a part of the city’s curriculum in family and consumer sciences increasing its impact from one school to six. It also went on to win state and national honors.
Enrollment has increased substantially thus affecting larger number of students and as a result, increasing the ability to impact on the lives of community members.
Evaluation data showed consistent positive results from students, teachers,
partners, community members and business people.

Potential Replication and scale of the initiative:
The program has been replicated nationwide as the presenter has created a guide and does national training on the topic
